The October Skuup - Candy, Candy, and More Candy
For this month's "Skuup," we'll hear from one of our data analysts, Sid Toriggino.
Anyone else still miss Halloween? No? Just me? In one last ditch effort to keep the Halloween spirit alive, we took a look at some Halloween-themed October trends in independent convenience stores.
Halloween weekend foot traffic
Does anyone else get embarrassed running in to convenience stores to grab last minute party items fully dressed as a Rugrat? Maybe I just need to stop saying yes to my girlfriend and her friends' coordinated Halloween costumes… However, we're probably in good company. Looking back at Halloween 2020, Skupos stores saw a 4% increase in foot traffic compared to the prior Saturday. Expect similar volumes, if not more this year as Delta cases continue to decline and boosters become more accessible.
Top 10 October candy products
The Scream killer called, he says you're next if you chose to pass out raisins and travel sized toothpaste to trick or treaters this year. Luckily, top selling candy products in convenience stores are sugary and sweet! Coming in at #1 this October were King Size Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups. In fact, Reese’s products take up three of the top ten spots. That chocolate and peanut butter combo is a winner!
Year-over-year monthly in-store & fuel sales
You know what’s scarier than your grandmother dressed as Pennywise from IT? Low monthly sales. Luckily for our retailers, 2021 has been their best year on record. Through September of this year, our retailers have seen 8% higher average monthly in-store revenue compared to 2020 and 19% higher in-store revenue compared to 2019.
Although in-store revenue is strong this year, fuel gallon sales are still lagging behind their 2019 gallon sales. Monthly fuel sales are down 5% on average compared to 2019, but up about 10% from 2020. That major drop in April of 2020 as a result of Covid shutdowns dragged gallon sales down 31% from the beginning of 2020.
We hope that everyone had an especially spooky Halloween, filled with trick or treaters, costume parties, and punch out of that plastic cauldron you keep in storage the other 364 days of the year. Until next time!
